Free video: A Trauma-Informed Approach to Coaching

Updated: Sep 18, 2023

We were delighted to present our first public workshop to fellow coaches at the Climate Coaching Alliance Global Fest 2023. In honour of all the work that volunteers put into the festival, we're offering a recording of the full workshop, minus the breakout group conversations.

In this workshop, we explored how to incorporate trauma-informed principles into our coaching practices. We offered concrete tools that come from recent research into the practice of coaching as well as the guiding principles of a trauma-informed approach from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in the US (SAMHSA).

Our belief is that a non-directive coaching stance can help restore to traumatized individuals the choices and autonomy that were taken from them and that it’s the very nature of the coaching relationship that helps folks heal and reconnect to themselves, to others, and to nature.

At the end of the workshop, the organizers surprised us with a request to continue hosting conversations about this important topic. Spoiler alert: we said yes!

The Healing Trauma through Coaching Pod* is an English-language online group that meets quarterly to share information, tools and strategies that can empower clients to be part of climate solutions by applying trauma-informed principles in coaching. A *pod is a community hosted through the Climate Coaching Alliance.
